Pricing and reimbursement of medicines: Commission consults on EU transparency rules

The European Commission has launched a public consultation in view of modernising rules on the transparency of Member States¿ decisions regarding the pricing and reimbursement of medicines. The consultation invites all interested parties to share their views on the review of Council Directive 89/105/EEC, often referred to as the 'transparency directive'. This directive has not been amended since 1989 despite substantial changes in the pharmaceutical market. Although the prices of medicines and reimbursement are decided at national level, the Transparency Directive is aimed at facilitating the free movement of medicines in the EU. The deadline for submitting contributions is 25 May 2011.

Companies turn to eco-innovation to tackle rising input costs and scarcity of materials

The competitiveness of European businesses is increasingly vulnerable to growing materials scarcity which causes price volatility. A new Eurobarometer survey shows that 75% of European businesses have experienced an increase in material costs in the past five years, while 90% expect price increases in the future. To tackle this challenge, SMEs are looking to eco-innovation as their answer. However, many businesses are still not fully aware of the potential effects of natural resource scarcity on their future operations.

European corporate tax base: making business easier and cheaper

the European Commission has proposed on 16 March 2011 a common system for calculating the tax base of businesses operating in the EU. The aim of this proposal is to significantly reduce the administrative burden, compliance costs and legal uncertainties that businesses in the EU currently face in having to comply with up to 27 different national systems for determining their taxable profits.

National regulatory frameworks and standards differ widely and the market for security products is highly diversified, ranging from cameras to complex scanner systems.
