European SME Week 2010 - Promoting and supporting entrepreneurship

VP Antonio Tajani has launched the European SME Week 2010 in Brussels yesterday. This pan-European campaign is designed to promote and support entrepreneurship. Over 3 million people are estimated to participate in the some 1261 events and activities that are being organised in 37 countries across Europe. It will showcase the support available to business at the European, national, regional and local level. At events SMEs and micro-firms can share experiences and develop their businesses.There is also a special focus on promoting entrepreneurship as a career option, especially for younger people. Some countries will run company open days, which will provide an insight into the challenges and rewards of running a business. The winners of the European Entrepreneurship Video Award 2010 have been honoured at a ceremony in Brussels last night.

The European Entrepreneurship Video Award aims at encouraging film lovers to prove their creativity and skills by producing a short video that deals with entrepreneurship. Creative people were asked to visualize what entrepreneurship is all about and how to encourage people to become entrepreneur. The winners have been awarded their prizes by Vice President Antonio Tajani yesterday.

Reduced Chemicals fees for SMEs

The Commission is taking further measures to ease the EU Regulations on chemicals for SMEs and reduce costs. The new Regulation, that sets the fees to be levied by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in connection with Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (CLP), foresees specific reductions for SMEs: 90% for micro , 60% for small, and 30% for medium-sized enterprises.

EPMF - European Progress Microfinance Facility

The European Union has set up a new European Progress Microfinance Facility providing microcredit to small businesses and to people who want to start their own small businesses. An initial budget of �100 million is expected to leverage �500 million of credit in cooperation with international financial institutions resulting in around 45,000 loans over a period of up to eight years.

Commission to take on bottlenecks to financing of SMEs

Data from the European Commission and European Central Bank indicate that bank credit standards are still tight, net demand for loans from enterprises declined and almost 20% of SMEs� bank loan applications are rejected. To address this issue Vice-President Antonio Tajani has proposed to upgrade the SME Finance Forum into a high-level dialogue between financial institutions and SMEs.
