This event pointed out the importance of cultural routes in the development of Europe as single destination. Industrial tourism was highlighted as a new way to attract tourists with the potential to encourage economic renewal in abandoned industrial areas.
The Fifth European Conference of Industrial Tourism took place in Ferrol from 17-20 June 2014, under the umbrella of Third Crossroads of Europe event and the European Conference on Industrial tourism.
The event was coorganised by the European Commission, the Provincial Council of A Coruña, the French Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Toledo.
The three day event included:
- an official opening with cultural visits on 17 June;
- a conference on 18 June;
- dedicated workshops and site visits on 19 June;
- a networking session for industrial tourism operators on 20 June.
A social program included industrial and cultural visits, for example, the Naval Route and guided tours of Ferrol, Santiago and A Coruña.
