In December 2013, the European Commission launched two public consultations to get the opinion from the tourism sector on ‘European Tourism of the Future’ and the ‘Regulatory and Administrative Framework on EU Tourism’.
The aim of the first consultation was to identify the key challenges and opportunities for the European tourism industry and help revise the Action Plan for the tourism sector adopted by the European Commission in 2010 in the Communication, ‘Europe, the world's No. 1 tourist destination – a new political framework for tourism in Europe’.

The second consultation on the framework for EU tourism businesses, public administrations, and other stakeholders identified policy initiatives or administrative practices that impose a burden on tourism businesses, as well as examples of good practice that have a positive impact on the industry.
