Helping SMEs operate in Peru and Chile: Mission for Growth, UNIDO & Eurochile events

News in RSS

As a concrete follow-up to a successful Mission for Growth to Peru in January this year, DG Enterprise's Director General led a technical mission to Peru between 2 and 5 December 2013. Moving to Chile on 6 December, discussions focused on SMEs, raw materials and tourism.

Accompanying Director General Daniel Calleja Crespo was a business delegation composed of 24 representatives of 15 European companies  - representing more than EUR 34 billion in turnover, and employing more than 140,000 people. The mission's objective was to foster industrial cooperation with politicians and entrepreneurs, promote European business policies and to develop ties between EU companies and Peru and Chile.

Peru

To monitor the development of the Memoranda of Understanding signed between the EU and Peru earlier this year  - on SMEs, industrial cooperation, construction and tourism -  discussions were held with high level government contacts.  Daniel Calleja and the delegation met with a number of Peruvian Vice Ministers: Francisco A Grippa (SME's and Industry) - who expressed interest in launching a structured dialogue on SMEs in 2014, Edgar Vasquez (Trade), Jose Miguel Gamarra (Tourism), Juan Fernando Rojas (Foreign Affairs), and Carlos Oliva (Finance) and Humberto Acuna Peralta President of the regional government of Lambayuque.

As the Peruvian economy remains largely based on the extraction and export of raw materials - mainly minerals and gas - Guillermo Shinno, Vice Minister for Mining, welcomed the proposal for an additional meeting dedicated to raw materials, to be held in Lima in February 2014. The EU and Peruvian space industries were also discussed during a meeting with the Peruvian Space Agency CONIDA.

Meetings were also held between the EU business delegation and the national society of industries (SNI), the exporters association (ADEX), the private investment promotion agency (Proinversion), the Inter-American Bank of Development, and Lima's chamber of commerce. Each of the sessions were followed by a question and answer time during which the EU business delegation and speakers often engaged in a lively exchange of views.

UNIDO

From 2 to 5 December 2013 in Lima, Daniel Calleja led the EU's delegation at the 15th General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Mr Calleja was a key speaker at the UNIDO High Level Forum "Industrial Development as a Sustainable Development Goal" which was attended by ministers of industry from 172 UN member states.

He also signed with UNIDO an Administrative Agreement for a dialogue on SME policy implementation, during a lunch debate and matchmaking event for approximately 200 entrepreneurs on the topic of "Industrial Cooperation and SMEs".

Chile

On 6 December 2013, Daniel Calleja moved to Santiago de Chile, meeting several ministers  - including the Chilean Minister of Economy, Development, and Reconstruction Félix de Vicente - to further advance Commission dialogues on SMEs, raw materials and tourism.

He was the guest of honor at Eurochile's 20th year anniversary reception. During this event, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Mr José Aravena, Director General of Eurochile and Jean-Noël Durvy, Director General of the Fondation Sophia Antipolis in France and partner of the European Cluster Collaboration Platform (ECCP).
