3215 companies have submitted 9084 registration dossiers for chemicals to ECHA Published on: 05/06/2013
The REACH deadline for registering substances manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 to 1 000 tonnes per annum was 24:00 (BST) on 31 May 2013.
The most hazardous substances in this tonnage band had to be registered already for the 1 December 2010 registration deadline.
By the 31 May 2013, 3 215 companies have submitted 9 084 registration dossiers to ECHA. 20 % of all registrations were submitted by micro, small or medium sized companies and 80 % came from large companies. 23 % of the registrations were made by ‘only representatives' on behalf of non-European companies.
Registrations were received from 29 EU Member States and EEA countries, with the highest percentage coming from Germany (31 %). Croatia will join the EU on 1 July 2013 and Croatian companies will benefit from separate pre-registration and registration deadlines.
Since the 2010 registration deadline, 2 923 substances have now been registered for the 2013 deadline. Additionally, 696 substances that had already been registered for the previous deadline were registered by new companies that joined the previous registrants.
Most of the substances were registered by groups of companies working together in joint submissions (82 %). The joint submissions have one lead registrant and, on average, 2.9 members.
The exact number of registered substances and registration dossiers will be available in early September when all the dossiers have been processed. In most of the pending cases, ECHA is waiting for the companies to have their registration fees paid.
Overall, registration worked well. The industry responded actively to the 2013 registration deadline and both ECHA's and Member States' national helpdesks supported all companies which contacted them. Additionally during the last months before the deadline, ECHA proactively contacted 510 companies to support them in submitting their registration dossiers.
