With the launch of the European Workplace Innovation Network (EUWIN) which took place on 10th April, DG ENTR has made another firm step in the direction of making Europe an innovation hub
In the reinforced Industrial Policy of October 2012, the Commission committed to “establish a learning network on workplace innovation in Europe to promote labour productivity and the quality of jobs.”
With the launch of the European Workplace Innovation Network (EUWIN) which took place on 10th April, DG ENTR has made another firm step in the direction of making Europe an innovation hub.
Over the next three years EUWIN will provide businesses and policy makers with evidence, concrete knowledge and practises to not only raise awareness about the benefits of workplace innovation but also to put it into practice across Europe. The goal is to spread an innovation culture throughout workplaces in Europe by pooling information together and building a system of best practice sharing on a continental scale.
Meeting took place at the European Parliament, with presence of two MEPs. Mrs Mary Honeyball from the UK recalled the importance of workplace innovation for the business competitiveness and quality of jobs. Portuguese MEP Maria da Graça Carvalho stressed out the support for new forms of innovation under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and particularly the promotion of non-technological innovation under the “Industrial Leadership” pillar.
Antti Peltomaki, Vice-Director General from DG ENTR, pointed out that exactly six months ago the Commission updated its vision of Europe's industrial policy. It is a partnership between the EU, Member States and industry to dramatically step up investment into innovation and give Europe a competitive lead in the new industrial revolution. This revolution will not be possible without new kind of innovation, also workplace innovation. That is why the Commission launched the EUWIN as one of the first concrete deliverables of the enhanced industrial policy.
A panel of four company leaders told the audience about their inspiring success stories and how they manage to increase their profits while improving the work organisation in their enterprises. Their stories and examples showcased concrete economic benefits both for SMEs as well as big companies.
EUWIN wants to achieve a European wide impact. To become a mass movement it already has its first ambassadors in nearly all European countries, and it is still recruiting new ones. At the same time EUWIN wants to be able to help develop the networks at each of the national levels. This will enable stakeholders to easily identify success stories and share them throughout Europe as innovation it’s not a size fits all matter.
The conference ended with a wrap up by a Commission speaker from the Innovation Policy for Growth Unit, DG Enterprise and Industry, and a call to support the EUWIN by becoming an ambassador for this initiative.
