21 JUNE – Brussels - Take part (with your kids!) in the launch event of the ‘Women in Research and Innovation’ campaign
On 21 June, DG Research and Innovation will launch a pan-European awareness campaign to encourage girls to develop an interest in science and to engage young women in scientific research careers. This reflects Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn’s commitment to promote gender equality and the gender dimension in research and innovation.
With the slogan ‘Science: it’s a girl thing!’, the first phase of the campaign will target girls from 13 to 18 years of age. It will challenge stereotypes around science and show girls that science can be a great opportunity for their future.
The launch event of the campaign will take place in Brussels on 21 June. It will include a conference at 14.30 at the European Parliament with Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn, MEPs, pupils and inspirational role models.
From 12.00 to 18.00, fun activities on the theme of science open to boys and girls will also take place on the Esplanade of the European Parliament, including:
- several workshops that will stimulate their appetite for science (build your own electronic dice, construct a machine with Lego to save energy, discover the hidden properties of elements surrounding you, etc.)
- a very special workshop exploring the connection between science and music with famous Belgian female DJ & producer, DJ Sand (Sandrine Droubaix);
- Shooting of the video clip of the ‘Chain Reaction Dance’ – a flashmob with original music and choreography, inspired by chemical reactions and performed by the gathered crowd of young people;
- Meetings with young scientists who will share their passion for science with students and answer all their questions on science studies and research careers.
Young people will be able to win prizes when participating to the workshops. An activity passport will be handed out – the more activities they participate in, the more prizes they can win!
Please spread the message among your kids!
