Third International Conference on Exploration - First meeting of the High-level International Space Exploration Platform
Lucca, Italy, 10 November, 2011 - Representatives of governments from around the world met in Lucca, Italy, on the 10th of November 2011, to highlight the importance of future space exploration of the Solar System and its direct benefits to humankind. The conference was jointly organised by the European Commission, the Polish Presidency of the EU, the European Space Agency and hosted by the Italian government.
The conference highlighted the value of space exploration for our societies. It further highlighted the fact that no single country can afford to explore the Solar System in a sustainable way alone. In the current economic situation collaboration and cooperation is fundamental for exploration.
"Today we have witnessed that the investments in space exploration technologies bring about real benefit for citizens. Exploration fosters scientific knowledge; it boosts innovation and provides growth in areas such as environment, health, renewable energy or access to clean water", stated European Commission Vice-President, Antonio Tajani, Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship. He added: "The objective of the European Commission has been fully met. A High-Level Political Dialogue on space exploration has been firmly established by a common Declaration".
Vice-President Tajani also underlined that this gathering allowed the Commission and the People's Republic of China to take further steps in reinforcing their cooperation in space matters.
