From mass to tailor made tourism – ICT platform opens the door to global market Published on: 09/11/2011
SMEs working in tourist niche markets should better participate in the digital value chain. Therefore the European Commission proposed today to establish an ICT and tourism platform.
At a dedicated meeting which took place in Brussels today, European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani underlined how important it is in the current economic crisis to support the tourism industry.
It is one of the few sectors which resists well in times of crisis and still has lot of potential for economic growth and employment in Europe. It is expected that in the coming decades tourism demand will shift from mass tourism to more tailor-made customised tourism for the individual traveller, which is a market segment particularly relevant for the EU SMEs in the tourism sector.
In order to make this niche market global the Commission participants of today’s meeting discussed the setting up of an ICT and tourism platform to facilitate SMEs’ participation in the digital value chain.
This platform will contain 3 pillars:
- The first pillar will take the form of high level group of personalities from tourism, ICT and related sectors.
- The second layer will offer a digital solution which will help SMEs to be better involved in global tourism markets. For example, a small specialised enterprise (e.g. restaurant, hotel, tour organizer, tourist guides etc.) could be connected via this platform to the different existing big digital networks at an affordable cost. This will raise its visibility and generate more clients thus increasing its revenue and creating new jobs.
- The third pillar will take the form of a practical support portal. It will become the one-stop-shop providing them with relevant information in order to launch their business.
