Measuring and Benchmarking the Structural Adjustment Performance of EU Industry

The manufacturing industry in Europe has for decades been through a process of
structural changes. Nevertheless, now more than ever before, the current economic crisis
highlights the need for a better understanding and more insights into the adjustment
performance of economic sectors.
The study is quite experimental in analysing adjustment performance in 23
sectors in 14 countries, and to some extent also descriptive in nature. However, the study
has revealed some interesting features of adjustment performance which call for further
and more detailed studies, which will benefit from a better access to harmonised,
European industrial statistics.
