The European Commission is revisiting EU industrial policy, with a view to adjusting and improving it where necessary to meet EU enlargement, globalisation, environmental and social challenges. This conference launched a broad public debate on the industrial policy challenges that Europe must take up now if it is to become the world's most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010, following the adoption of the Communication. The President of the European Commission Romano Prodi opened the discussion, followed by two panels introducing prominent industry representatives and key institutional players of the Member States as well as Enterprise Commissioner Erkki Liikanen. With the active contribution of the audience, they sought answers to the following key questions: Which horizontal policies are right for European Industry? How to address sectoral specificities?
