If you use your personal music players for only 5 hours per week at high volume control settings (more than 89 dB, which is the current limit for noise in the workplace), you might incur in permanent hearing loss after 5 years.
On 27 January 2009, the European Commission organizes a scientific conference to discuss among other things whether a restriction of the noise level of personal music players to 100 dB, is sufficient to avoid such damage - as fixed by the existing European Harmonised Standard EN 60065:2002 "Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus - Safety requirements" under the Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC and the Radio and Telecomm Terminal Directive 1999/5/EC.
The conference will be opened by Alexandra Jour-Schroeder, Head of Unit at DG Enterprise and Industry.
