Development of police evidence management and forensic analysis capacity
The EU has provided more than €3 million in equipment and training to enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies in the field of evidence management and forensic analysis.
The project, managed by the European Agency for Reconstruction, is one component of support to the establishment of an effective and publicly accountable police service in the country, a service operating according to EU standards and identified best practices. The new equipment provided to the Police technical crime units will enhance and modernise the methodologies for evidence collection, storage, management and analysis.
The €841.262 project consisted in reconstruction of the laboratory’s main building (approximately 2,700m2) consisting of four floors, basement and garage as well as the building of an external gas station (65m2). The renovation process included architectural works, electrical and mechanical installations, a fire protection system as well as an access control system. The renovation of the Police Central Forensic Laboratory was completed in February 2007 when the premises were handed over to the Forensic Department for use. Equipment worth over €3M (see above) was also delivered and installed in the forensic laboratory. Ths equipment comprised microscopes and forensic software, IT equipment, video equipment, biological analysis equipment, evidence collection equipment for the Regional Forensic Investigation Units, vehicles and equipment for the Institute of Forensic Medicine. The laboratories are now fully equipped and operational. The Forensic Department is now in a position to install the new IT system and to increase the efficiency and mobility of forensic personnel.
