Speaking to 500 representatives of cities, energy industries, the financial sector and research EU Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger started the EU's initiative for the energy efficient cities of tomorrow.
"With a 80 Million Euro package we demonstrate smart integration of urban energy technologies in selected pilot cities. This will kick-start important new markets for European industry. In our Smart Cities Stakeholder Platform all cities can then benefit from the know-how of the forerunners. Cities are key to the EU's objectives of 20% energy saving by 2020 and to developing a low carbon economy by 2050, because 70% of the EU's energy consumption takes place in cities." the Commissioner explained.
In an FP7 call to be opened on 20 July this year, teams of cities and industry partners can apply for EU-funding in the fields of integrative management of urban energy flows that also include transport, water and waste solutions. Further calls under the initiative address buildings, heating and cooling, networks and energy supply technologies.
