Biofuels FlightPath 6th Workshop: "Incentives for Biofuels Use in Aviation"
Brussels, 20 June 2012
The Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) organised this Workshop in collaboration with the Core Team of the Biofuels FlightPath 2020 Initiative. The purpose was to discuss with key stakeholders the various incentives that could facilitate and accelerate the market deployment of advanced paraffinic sustainable biofuels in the aviation sector.
The Workshop started with presentations on the current problems the EU aviation sector is facing in competition from non-EU airlines and an analysis of the UK transport policies in relation to using biofuels in aviation. This was followed by a presentation of the USA activities and policy initiatives on sustainable alternative aviation fuels.
The second part of the workshop focused on an analysis of the various incentives carried out by SAFUC and a study on the competitive impacts on the airlines of an eventual biojet mandate. The session closed by a comparative analysis on incentives for the biodiesel sector that ensured a quick deployment in several EU countries.
The panel discussion started by a presentation on the "cocktail" of possible incentives and was followed by extensive opinion exchanges between the panelists from the aviation and the biofuels sectors and the participating stakeholders.
