Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Data Collection and Reporting, Record Keeping and Knowledge Transfer in the EU
This 18-months study was initiated by the Commission at the end of 2007 in order to analyse and provide advice for the collection, recording and reporting of radioactive waste data and inventories. The study aims as well to evaluate and propose solutions for long-term record keeping and transfer of information and knowledge on waste data at national and eventually international level. The overall objective of the study is to identify best practices and recommend measures at both national and EU levels.
Situation Concerning Uranium Mine and Mill Tailings in an Enlarged EU
The legacy of about sixty year mining and milling of uranium ores in Europe has resulted in a variety of smaller and larger environmental liabilities needing care and attention. A special group amongst all these liabilities is the group of mine and mill tailing disposal sites. A detailed overview of the situation of these disposal sites in the EU is the subject of a special study completed by the Commission in 2006 and updated in 2008.
The study clearly shows that a long-term stewardship is needed, not only for management of existing legacies, but also for avoiding new legacies and meeting demands for future uranium production.
Attitudes towards radioactive waste
The main conclusion on citizens' attitudes towards nuclear energy is that the support for nuclear energy production has grown significantly in the European Union since 2005. The climate change debate, and in particular the nuclear power’s important role in reducing CO2 emissions has inevitably affected the public opinion. The study also clearly reveals that the safety aspect of radioactive waste management is crucial for opponents of nuclear energy.
