International Workshop: Guidelines on Medical Physics Expert (MPE)

Seville, Spain, 9-10 May 2011

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The main objectives of the European Commission project 'Guidelines on Medical Physics Expert' (TREN/09/NUCL/SI2.549828) is to provide for improved implementation of the provisions of the Council Directive 97/43/EURATOM (Medical Exposures Directive, MED) relating to the Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and to facilitate the harmonisation of the role, education and training of the MPE among the Member States of the European Union. In this way the project will support the European Commission in its actions relating to the optimisation of radiation doses to individuals submitted to medical exposures.

In addition the project will:

  • issue European Guidelines detailing the statutory responsibilities of the MPE according to the MED,
  • propose a comprehensive “standard” inventory of learning outcomes for the education and training of the MPE expressed in terms of the minimum Knowledge, Skills and Competences necessary to perform the statutory responsibilities effectively and safely,
  • make recommendations for the most appropriate education and training qualification structure, based on the European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning and the qualifications framework of the European Higher Education Area,
  • update criteria for MPE staffing levels in relation to standards of patient service quality and risk levels and as a function of the number, range and complexity of radiation based devices and procedures at a given healthcare facility.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Workshop are:

  • to present the purpose, detailed contents and main recommendations of the guidelines drafted in the project report before its publication,
  • to present critical points of view and overall agreements on the guidelines by invited critical reviewers from bodies, organisations and institutes with relevant knowledge and experience in the field; National Member Organizations of the Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) and representatives of associated stakeholders such as the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO), the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) and the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS), shall be invited,
  • to provide a forum for discussions regarding difficulties that the various Member States would encounter in the implementation of the proposed guidelines for the MPE,
  • to provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange information on national systems, experiences and expectations on the role, status, education, training, recognition and cross-border mobility of the MPE.
