10th Anniversary of the EU-Russia Energy Dialogue
High level conference, Brussels, 22 November 2010
On 22 November 2010, the Coordinators of the EU – Russia Energy Dialogue, the Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger and Minister Sergey Shmatko, organised a high-level conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the EU-Russia Energy Dialogue, founded at the EU-Russia Summit in October 2000.
The conference was followed by the Permanent Partnership Council (PPC) on Energy between the EU and the Russian Federation.
During the PPC, a Joint Report "EU-Russia Energy Dialogue 2000-2010: Opportunities for our future Energy Partnership" [5 MB] All available translations.was signed by the Coordinators of the Dialogue.
The participants of the conference and the PPC recognised that the Energy Dialogue has significantly contributed to the confidence building between the EU and the Russian Federation in the strategically important energy sector. It has been instrumental in solving very concrete problems, in exchanging positions and ideas, in approximating the EU and Russian legislation and standards notably in the field of energy efficiency, and in promoting joint projects, be it in the field of infrastructure or energy efficiency.
The Dialogue was considered as a fundamental tool to further strengthen the EU-Russia relationship. The Energy sector is an important area of the EU – Russia Strategic Partnership on Modernisation, agreed at the Rostov EU-Russia summit on 31 May – 1 June 2010. Both sides agreed in this context to improve the regulatory environment, to facilitate a stable and coherent investment climate and industry cooperation, as well as to cooperate in the development of new technologies and energy efficiency.
