Energy from abroad

Energy dialogue between the European Commission, Directorate General for Energy and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan was set up in 2007. Discussions have ranged from sustainable energy policies to energy security and energy research and innovation. Following the Fukushima nuclear accident, the EU-Japan Summit in 2011 outlined areas of potential cooperation on nuclear energy, energy cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

In 2013, in view of the changes in recent years, including the shale gas revolution in North America, rising gas demand in Asia and divergence in gas prices in regional markets, the EU-Japan energy cooperation has been extended to include expert-level exchanges on developments in gas markets.
