The Regulation on security of gas supply took a big step towards improving the security of gas supply at European and regional level.
It introduced a common framework to assess the risks of and identify measures to prevent a disruption and to establish plans to manage potential disruptions. The actions in this common framework are carried out on national level with the possibility for a regional cooperation, and the Commission overseeing the response to ensure consistency.
The roles and responsibilities of national authorities in the field of gas security are more transparent and streamlined by the nomination of Competent Authorities, which are responsible for carrying out most of the tasks set out in the Regulation.
A common minimum level of preparedness is defined through the infrastructure and supply standards, and public service obligations put on natural gas undertakings are published.
