Your rights as an energy consumer
What are your rights?
As a consumer, you are now better protected and have the right to choose the best gas and electricity deal for you, thanks to the European Union (EU).
For more information on your rights, follow the links for your country.
A single point of contact in each EU country helps you to find information on your rights and on opportunities for handling disputes.
Companies selling electricity and/or gas today are required to provide transparent information on their price offers/tariffs and in their bills. So you can compare prices online through price comparison tools.
Companies must make it fast (less than three weeks) and simple for you to switch to the company (supplier) you choose.
You also have the right to a good standard of service and of complaint handling by your energy service provider. For example, you can use alternative dispute resolution for prompt and efficient out-of-court solution of disputes.
All EU countries must ensure that high standards of consumer protection are in place, especially for those who are most in need. In particular, they must take measures to address energy poverty where it is identified. Examples of such measures include benefits through social security systems to ensure electricity supply, or support for energy efficiency improvements.
