CECED Self Commitment on Washing Machines

The European Committee of Manufacturers of Domestic Equipment (CECED) represents the interests of domestic washing machines manufacturers in Europe.

In April 1996 the CECED presented a first Commitment about energy saving to the European Commission. The Commitment was made on behalf of the European manufacturers of domestic washing machines and was aimed at a considerable reduction of energy consumption of washing machines. It was approved on December 9, 1998 when the Commitment was published in the Official Journal.

The overall saving target was of the Commitment was to reduce the specific energy consumption of domestic washing machines by 20% over the period 1994 - 2000. Practically, this targeted at bringing the average consumption value of 0.30 kWh/kg down to 0.24 kWh/kg within 6 years.

The target of this Commitment was achieved at the end of 1999. The specific energy consumption was then calculated and reported to be 0.228 kWh/kg. In that way a saving of 24% had been achieved - without regulative measures and without adverse market distortion.

Upon the successful fulfilment of the first Commitment a second one has been developed to cover 2002-2008 period, which can be downloaded here.
