EuCoRes project aims for the creation of a geographical database and map of EU coal basins including potential sources of coal bed methane based on a harmonised typology.
Fossil fuels are still a very important source of energy today. Therefore, a good knowledge of the conditions and geographical locations of these supplies is essential for future policy making. More than just strategic knowledge, this information serves as an essential tool for the assessment of past and future exploitations and the problems and benefits involved.
The focus of this project is a thorough classification and mapping of coal and coal bed methane (CBM) in the EU. Next to the formulation of a unified classification and terminology, an extensive geographical database is to be constructed where detailed and georeferenced information of all existing coal deposits in the EU is included. The combined results of the different types of deliverables will serve as reliable starting point for future studies or consultations in this field.
The project welcomes all other national/local data providers who wish to join in this initiative by either making available all types of data concerning coal deposits and CBM or attending our workshop to further discuss and optimize a harmonized classification and corresponding database structure for EU coal resources.
The final database is not definite, but its status can be updated as future changes can have a profound influence. Examples of such changes are an increasing knowledge of existing deposits or an improved exploitation feasibility due to technological progress or due to change of economic conditions.
