News

On 29 April 2004, the Council and the European Parliament adopted Regulation No 883/2004 on the co-ordination of social security systems. This Regulation contains a fundamental reform and a simplification of the rules for co-ordination in the field of social security improving the protection for the citizen. The Regulation will only be applicable once the necesssary implementing provisions are adopted by the co-legislator, i.e. probably not before the end of 2006. (09/06/04)
In close link with the European Health Insurance Card, Regulation No 631/2004(EC) has achieved the overall alignment of rights between all persons covered by the Regulation No 1408/71 . This regulation is applicable from the 1rst of june 2004. (01/06/04)
From the 1st June onwards, European citizens who are travelling within the European Economic Area, i.e. the European Union, Norway, Iceland , Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, and the EFTA countries, for private or professional reasons will be given a European Health Insurance Card, which will simplify the procedure when receiving medical assistance during their stay in a Member State. Extension of provisions of Regulation No 1408/71 to nationals of third countries
On 1 June 2003 Regulation No 859/2003 entered into force. As a result, third country nationals as well as the members of their families and their survivors can rely on the EU provisions on co-ordination of social security, provided they are legally resident in the territory of a Member State and are in a situation which is not confined in all respects within a single Member State. Regarding family benefits, specific rules apply with respect to Austria and Germany. (27/08/03)
Agreement on free movement of person with Switzerland has entered into force
The agreement on free movement of persons between the Member States of the European Union and Switzerland has entered into force on 1 June 2002. It has been concluded for an initial duration of seven years but can be extended indefinitely. This agreement also contains provisions in the field of social security: apart from a few exceptions the provisions of Regulations 1408/71 and 574/72 which apply between EU-Member States now also apply in relation to Switzerland.
