Getting ready for the Gender Mainstreaming Peer Review in Styria

May 2007

The Peer Review on "Gender Mainstreaming: a Tool for Change" will be held in Graz, the capital of Styria, on 9-10 May 2007 and a range of documents that will steer the discussions in each of the respective workshops have just been made available and can be downloaded.

The rationale of the four workshops, which will be focusing on gender mainstreaming as a tool for regional governments, local authorities, employment offices and private industries to stimulate and promote peer discussion. The workshops are based on the assumption that decision-makers and practitioners have a keen interest in talking with, and learning from, their peers. So, people who are actors in regional and local policies will consider how to make gender equality a reality, alongside their counterparts from other Member States. This will also be the case for those with responsibilities in the employment policies, whilst representatives of the business world will examine how best to establish a culture of gender equality.

The event will be the first of a series of Peer Reviews organised by seven Member States that have joined forces to form a Community of Practice (CoP) on gender mainstreaming. The pro-active participation of both the European Commission and the national, regional and local governments of the countries and regions involved indicate how much importance is being attached to gender mainstreaming. Lenia Samuel, Deputy General Director of the Directorate General for Employment, Social affairs and Equal Opportunities will give a key note speech, the Styrian Prime Minister will open the conference, several ministers and cabinet members of regional governments will act as Peers in the workshops, as will mayors and chief executives of municipal administrations, directors of employment services and senior managers from leading enterprises from Austria and other EU Member States.
