The project will work within the Göteborg metropolitan area, seeking to reduce labour market discrimination against persons with non-Swedish ethnic backgrounds and to enable utilisation of the skills and labour market resources offered by such persons. Efforts that militate against discrimination based on sex and ethnic background are of special interest. The current project partners are the Göteborg Municipality, the Västra Götaland County Administrative Board and the Göteborg & Co Commercial Section, the Swedish Association of Ethnic Entrepreneurs (all co-applicants), as well as the National Integration Office as a partner.
The project will bring out and demonstrate that the skills and cultures of the various ethnic groups represent a resource rather than a problem. The aim is to create work opportunities for persons of foreign extraction, to contribute to integration and vounteract segregation through cultural activities and to help increase understanding of how society can develop positively through collaboration between various ethnic combines.
This project application has in itself served as a catalyst in gathering many of the main actors in the region into a development partnership. The concept behind this is to create a forum where new ideas, new ways of working together and new networks are shaped, developed and implemented co-operatively in order to counteract discrimination, change attitudes and create new jobs. The intent is to broaden the partnership during the pilot study to include representatives of persons with non-Swedish ethnic background, the County Labour Board, manpower services, other business organisations, the educational sector and various social service departments. The project will also work together with one or more international partners. However, even at its current level the project holds an unrivelled promise of success as all important segments of society have expressed a desire to join in working on this question.
The museum´s role in the project is to serve as one of the major actors in breaking down the prejudices that lead to ethnic segregation and discrimination. This institytion is an excellent forum for revealing and discussing these questions, serving in that way as the project´s show-window. Indeed, the project´s strength lies in how a collaboration between the museum as a shaper of opinion, employers and the business community, the municipality and the representatives of the national government provides unique opportunities for implementing necessary structural societal changes, as well as for creating real jobs.
A basic precept for the project activities in cultural diversity is that the programs will not only be about or exist as a vehicle for the various Ethnic groips, but also be shaped together with or by them. Seen as a whole, the Equal Project will lay the foundation for a positive spiral.
We feel that there are excellent possibilities for shared financing.

Agreement Summary

Text available in

The three DPs see the barriers to equal employment of people from ethnic minorities as operating at three levels:
the societal level of culture and perceptions
the company level of workplace values, attitudes, practices, structures and norms
the individual level of skills, confidence, qualifications, expectations

Our transnational programme will undertake work at these three different levels, and make the connections between the levels.

The three DPs share the objective of making a long-term sustainable difference to the employment prospects of people from ethnic minorities in their own locality, and of developing new methods and tools which can be applied more widely across Europe.

We are all committed to creating a small number of joint products as well as sharing the learning from each of the national programmes

We recognise the complementary expertise of the three DPs and have a common objective of learning from each other's work

We also have a common commitment to being 'co-producers' with people who are at risk of discrimination, and our transnational programme will therefore involve people from ethnic minorities as actors and contributors rather than simply as recipients
