Rationale

Text available in

Civic Association Aid to Children in Danger was established in 1994 and was oriented to drug problems. In 1997 we did study of life style in Petržalka, the part of Bratislava, we had a seat and is specific by the most extended crime in Bratislava. After the study we focused on domestic violence – it was one of the most thorny problem and there was no centre for abused women in Slovakia in 1997.
So, the Hope Centre have become since 1998 our main project.

The Hope Centre
1998 – 2005
for silent victims of violence

•Primary prevention
- information for public

•Secondary prevention
- educational programmes

•Terciary prevention
- the main activities
- the straight help

The activities of the Hope Centre is devided into the three parts.

The primary prevention extend to information for public and professionals about our services and mobilizing the refusing attitude of public to domestic violence. Also we cooperate with governmental expert groups.

The educational activities for proffesionals (teachers, social workers ad other) and cooperation with them to seek for victims belong to secondary prevention. For example last year we did several trainings for teachers from Petržalka and after the first one they found out durng the first week three abused children.

The main activities – the straight help to victims belong to terciary prevention and are doing daily.

Services in the Hope Centre

•nonstop hotline and crisis intervention
•daily counselling service - psychological, social and legal consultancy – in 2004 we recorded 499 clients (401 women, 60 children, 38 men)
•individual therapy and self-help groups for victims
•individual therapy for offenders - both before and after doing their sentences
•filiative therapy for children and their parents
•providing shelter - in cooperation with others
•special program for children oriented to emotional stabilization and life skills development
•team of volunteers
•free-time activities

The services in the Hope Centre are provided by two psychologists, social worker, lawyer and volunteers involved mostly in social assistance, crisis hot line and children program.

Women need most of all to be accepted and feel, we believe them, when they come to the centre and look for the help. They were put down by offenders and often also by close family , policemen and other proffesionals before they comming to the centre, so the full acceptation is the first step of therapy and help them to build self-confidence and to stop out the cycle of violence. We have started with services for abused women, but the women have children affected by violence and needed the help. So in 2002 we decided to implement the holistic approach to the family impected by domestic violence, working with both victims and offenders.
