On Tuesday the 1st June, Eurodiaconia ran in partnership with Crossreach, its Scottish member, a conference on “Digging Deeper - delving below the surface of poverty” in Edinburgh, Scotland.
This one day conference brought together experts from different public and voluntary sector backgrounds to share thinking and practice on tackling poverty and social exclusion in Scotland and Europe. Following Keynote Speeches by Johann Lamont MSP, Jarmo Kokko, Chloe Clemmons, Lewis Rose and Martin Johnstone, delegates attended interactive workshops on topics such as new forms of social advocacy, is the European year 2010 making a difference? and what has the EU ever done for us? The salient points of the day were drawn together by Counsellor Rev Ewan Aitken and the day finished with a traditional Scottish Ceildh.
Eurodiaconia's next main event in the framework of the European year for combating poverty and social exclusion will take place in the European Parliament on the week of the 27th September 2010. Bringing together actors from various Christian traditions through Caritas, Cec, the secretariat of the Comece and Eurodiaconia, this conference will be the occasion of the launch of an Ecumenical common understanding of poverty accompanied by recommendations addressed to the European Union and Member States. The conference will close on the opening of an exhibition of the work of Christian actors across Europe in tackling poverty and social exclusion.
