The meeting with a person experiencing poverty

The meeting with a person experiencing poverty

1. PREREQUISITES

  • Draw up a list of contacts for NGOs working in the field (refer to the list on the website)
  • Gather information about the chosen NGO
  • Reflect personally on the issue
  • Meet with the NGO (person in the field) and present the aim of the task and the final goal
  • Plan with the NGO contact person the first meeting with the person experiencing poverty

2. MEETING WITH THE PERSON EXPERIENCING POVERTY

The first contact with the person experiencing poverty is a decisive moment.

  • Introduce yourself: explain the project, theme and the aim of the work
  • Attitude: be open, put aside your preconceptions, be willing to listen, be sincere, be close (without being intrusive)

3. PHOTOGRAPHIC WORK: USING YOUR ART TO HELP SOMEONE

  • Respect the person and their situation (ensure that they do not feel used or controlled). They must be able to express whatever they wish
  • Listen to the demands and limits of your interlocutor
  • Allow the time necessary to reach a position of trust and depth
  • Define together how you will work (each person’s role, treatment of the theme, choice of subject, schedule of meetings)
  • Select together the photographs to send in for the exhibition

4. FOLLOW-UP

Continue to involve the person experiencing poverty throughout the project and in all its aspects: select the photos together, show them the photo gallery on the website, show them the video of the exhibition, give them the participation certificate and the exhibition catalogue after the exhibition in Brussels (if your photo is exhibited).
