Préparation The training course “Arts in Prisons” is the first European course focused on the use of arts in prisons. The course aims to reach as many participants as possible and to offer high quality key note speakers and workshop leaders. To do so, the course program is prepared to run 3 days parallel with the 2nd Conference of the European Prison Arts Network. Course details (i.e., title, objectives, target delegates, course program, workshop presenters, keynote speakers, etc) have been discussed at the 1st PAN Conference, Dublin, 2007. The conference and the course are announced on the PAN and associated websites and publications www.panproject.org; www.epea.org. In addition, all members of the European Education Association will receive notification. The conference venue is booked. The Lovech Male Prison, Bulgaria is assigned to organize a theatrical performance and to arrange two exhibitions of prisoners’ paintings. In general, preparations are well under way to ensure the success of the event.
Objectifs The global theme of the course is Arts in Prisons and it will focus on exploring the role of arts and best practices in creative activities in prisons.
The main aim of the event is to bring together practitioners, educational management, researchers, policy makers and others working in the field of prison education across Europe, in order to offer a training in best methods for using arts in prisons; to debate the nature of art education, to disseminate best practices, to encourage the implementation of art activities in the prison regime, to provide a forum for those engaged in research in the area of arts in prisons, to provide an opportunity to network and share ideas for those working in prisons and in particular, to identify the common training and in-service needs of prison teachers involved in artistic activities.
Méthodologie We plan a training course with the aim to provide participants with practical teaching techniques and methodologies in order to encourage the implementation of different art courses in European prisons. We gladly welcome colleagues from juvenile, female and male prisons; practitioners and administrators engaged in creative and cultural activities from as many European countries as possible.
There will be a number of multinational keynote speakers addressing specific aspects of visual and performing arts; multimedia and ICT in prison arts, transformative learning, etc. There will be a series of training workshops presented by those working in the field of prison arts. The various workshops are focused on the practical training of participants.
The training includes also two visits to Bulgarian prisons. The participants will have the opportunity to attend the premiere of a theatrical performance produced by prisoners and the opening of an exhibition of prisoners’ paintings. In addition, there will also be poster workshop to provide the opportunity for the presenters and the delegates to talk to each other and network in an informal, relaxed but structured forum. Participants can present their work as well as works of inmates from the participating countries.
Highlights, some of the keynote speeches and extracts from the workshops will be displayed in real time on the PAN Project-, and the EPEA websites during the course of the event so that those unable to attend can get online a sense of what is taking place and being discussed.
Suivi The course & conference report will be published in the PAN Magazine. It will be available also to download from the PAN Project website. Common concerns, issues and trends which emerge from the presentations, workshops, etc, will be identified by the PAN Project members and will form the focus for a next training course. The identified training and in-service needs will form the basis of future projects / seminars / training events.
