Find out how gifted children are treated in your country: either enrroled in the ordinary school, or do exist special schools or classis for gifted children. In case you are already involved in the gifted children education, please prepare short presentation about your experiences.
IMPORTANT! Aply for grant to your National Agency before January 16, 2009. Later submission will be not accepted!!!
Highly gifted children tend to be those who demonstrate asynchronous development. Due to their high cognitive abilities and high learning intensities, they relate to the world in unique ways. Those children have often extremely high individually scored IQ tests, generally above the 140 IQ range. Others may be prodigies in areas such as math, science, language and/or the arts.
Highly gifted children demonstrate characteristics such as the extreme need to: 1. Learn at a much faster pace. 2. Process material to a much greater depth. 3. Show incredible intensity in energy, imagination, intellectual prowess, sensitivity, and emotion which are not typical in the general population.
Due to their unique characteristics, these children are particularly vulnerable. Highly gifted children need a specialized advocacy because very little has been done to develop appropriate curriculum and non-traditional options for these children.
The crucial question is if they need to go through school with their own age mates: Either it's true that children need to play and interact socially with other children their age, or they do not need to learn with them. Especially in the case of a highly gifted child who may have a chronological age of six and a mental age of 11 who has been reading since two. To put that child in a reading class with other six year olds who are just learning to read is sheer torture for that child.
The proposed Seminar has an ambition to discussed all those questions from the EU perspective, especially when 2009 is The European Year of Creativity and Innovation.
The Seminar is scheduled for 3 working days. On the first day 4 invited speakers who with theirs keynote speech will address the core problem of the gifted child, namelly: 1) Dr. E. Vondrakova, founder of the first gymnasium in Czech Republic for students with high IQ, 2) Dr.J.Laznibatova who is founder of the school for gifted children in Bratislava (Slovakia), running for more than 11 years,3)Annette Heinbokel from Germany, author of the many books on gifted chidren, 4)Dr. M.Nedvedova, director of the basic school in Ceske Budejovice with the classes for gifted children. Organizers would like to inspire participants to submit presentations based on their own experiences, legal conditions to lounch such school in their country, data from research in this field, etc.
The visit to school with classes for gifted children in Ceske Budejovice, in addition to visit some interesting sites in the South Bohemia and learn the culture and the pitoresque landscape are scheduled.
Every such meeting which bring together people keenly interested in the specific field, and sharing common interests and ideas, builds informal friendship. There is an ambition of the organizers to build a network for further exchange of experiences, ideas, to organize on the multi/or bilateral basis the reciprocal visits, etc. The problem of gifted children schooling is hot topic requiring action and our Seminar could be a starting point for that.
