Participants are asked to prepare the work in the discussion groups and practival workshops by studying the material that will
be send out beforehand.
Every participant should bring textbooks/teaching materials related to their history curriculum and/or examples of good
practice related to the content of the course
The aims of the conference are to:
•Share the Turkish experience on the learning and teaching of history, based on recent curricula with particular attention to innovative history teaching
•Present Turkish and international examples of good practice in teaching topics from a local to a European perspective, taking into consideration different levels in education and different age groups
•Contribute in the debate on how history and social studies education in Turkey and the EU could be conceptualised by creating a platform to discuss the issues of ‘identity’ and ‘multiculturalism’ in the context of Turkey and EU relationships.
•Offer opportunities for discussion for history teachers from different countries and traditions
•Strengthen national and international cooperation, communication and networking on the training of history and social studies teachers in Turkey and abroad.
•Enhance European awareness and dimension in history and social studies teaching in Turkey.
•Present results of comparative international research projects
•Assess EUROCLIO’s work on the learning and teaching of History in Europe and to decide on its policy priorities for the coming years.
•Discuss the work of NGOs in the development of history education across Europe and beyond and in developing cooperation between different countires.
•Address the sensitive and controversial issues
•Inform about the progress in development of a comparative, common interactive tool for European history
•A full training course for at least 200 participants, from Turkey and a wide range of European countries, with lectures, best practice workshops, school visits, discussion groups and on-site education;
•Debate on Turkish history education particularly with respect to European and international perspectives, to raise awareness of the importance of history teaching for young people to socialise into a rapidly changing society;
•Evaluation of existing Turkish and international teaching materials for school history in design, pedagogic practice, assessment opportunities and professional implications
•Evaluation of EUROCLIO/MATRA project, A Key to Europe, Innovative Methodology in Turkish School History.
•The 2012 EUROCLIO General Assembly, assessing the results of the policy and work of EUROCLIO for 2011 and deciding on the policy priorities for history education in Europe for 2013-2014;
•A Europe- wide comparative questionnaire exploring challenges of teaching history from different perspectives.
•A PR-campaign in the media in Turkey and beyond on the importance of innovative (includes multiperspectivity and critical thinking) history teaching in Europe.
Dissemination of the Conference materials through training seminars carried out by EUROCLIO, its member associations and other partners.
