Organic Agriculture (OA) as a rural development strategy addresses the need for sustainable growth while meeting consumer demand for increased food quality and safety. European Commission (EC) policy encourages the development of OA with the European Action Plan for Organic Food and Farming, which is applied nationally through efforts to increase land area in OA. The European Council of Young Farmers found training to be a ‘very important instrument’ to adopting the European Model of agriculture. Many EU countries have OA training initiatives, but of unknown quality and effectiveness.
This innovative quality-certified training program is based on the European Quality Assurance Reference Framework (EQARF) and focuses on the education/training of agricultural professionals, combining traditional teaching methods with the adoption of ICT methods and online teaching resources. Additionally, the training is designed to empower trainees to become certified and high level qualified trainers of trainers in Organic Agriculture professionals, creating opportunities for further trainings and entrepreneurialism.
Our course will include theoretical lectures (presentations) and practical sessions (hands-on e.learning material, field visits) on:
- Introduction to methods & practices in Organic Agriculture
- Analysis of the available certified training opportunities in the Organic Agriculture (OA)
- Methodologies for the design of certified training activities in the field of OA
- Specialised topics and case studies in OA in different countries
- Blended training methods to approach, educate and advise farmers
- Pedagogical strategies and best practices for using digital teaching & learning resources
- Strategies for searching information and educational material online
- How you can find other people with similar interests making use of Web2.0 tools and practices
- Principles of OA and Agroecology
- Organic farming legislation, certification and standards
- Product packaging, labeling, processing, sorting
- Marketing of organic products and legislation
- Approaching, training and supporting farmers & rural professionals
- Farm management in OA and exploitation of new markets
- Crop protection and functional biodiversity
- Soil management & plant nutrition
- Weeds management

The 7-day training course will include 20 hours of lectures and demonstrations and 15 hour of hands-on workshops. The training part of the course will be held in an auditorium equipped with a data projector and wireless internet access for all participants. Field trips to organic farms are also included in the programme.
During the weeks following the training course the participants will be guided to organize national training seminars for a group of farmers with particular professional needs in OA in their countries, using the curriculum from the training course and training resources from CerOrganic Web portal.
The participants will be welcome to systematically participate to the CerOrganic project user community. The training team will provide to the participants all the necessary guidelines and support to implement the proposed approaches in their professional context.
