FULL DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING CONTENTS
IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE TRAINING: (EN)
PREPARATION REQUESTED IN ADVANCE OF THE COURSE:
The participants will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about their background (school/organisation, teaching experience (subjects), skills in English, ICT skills and experience). Furthermore the participants will have access to the CIRCE manual on teaching Classics with ICT as well as to the resources on the CIRCE website. Hands-on training materials will be given out during the course.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE:
To enable teachers in Classics all over Europe to exploit the ICT resources available for their teaching of Ancient Greek and/or Latin and/or Classical Civilisation and to help create a new learning environment for Classics with ICT. Basic skills will be trained along with more advanced exercises and the new pedagogical and didactic approach enabled by ICT will be addressed.

METHODOLOGY:
Various topics from the CIRCE manual will be presented and followed up by workshops using computers to train various skills and point out the resources available for Classics (different kinds of software, internet resources, various databases, electronic dictionaries etc.). All will be put into in a pedagogical and didactic frame.

OUTCOME:
Widespread use of the CIRCE manual and the CIRCE website resources in everyday teaching of Classics all over Europe. Better understanding of the possible advantages and dangers of using ICT in Classics. A platform for European collaboration between Classics teachers via the CIRCE website forum. Further additions to the electronic data bank of lesson plans on the CIRCE website.

FOLLOW-UP:
Lesson plans created by the participant during the course can - after testing in class - be added to the lesson plan section of the project website. The website will provide a forum for the participants to discuss the in-service training after it has ended and to exchange further experiences and materials.

THE HOSTING INSTITUTION WILL PROVIDE A CERTIFICATE OF PARTICIPATION INDICATING THE NATURE OF THE COURSE, ITS LENGTH AND THE PARTNER INSTITUTIONS INVOLVED. CERTIFICATION WILL BE SENT TO PARTICIPANTS AT THE END OF THE COURSE.

PROGRAMME OF THE TRAINING ACTIVITIES (DAY BY DAY)
IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE TRAINING:
DAY0= Mon,July31st:Arrival,welcome & presentation

Day1=Tue,Aug1:Integration of ICT into Classics teaching programme
Instructions and hands-on tasks on Word processing (basic skills concerning copy-paste & basic clipboard operation). Pictures in Word: size and resizing. General knowledge of picture processing. Searching the Internet in general. Searching for Greek & Latin texts & classical images. Copyright issues. Each day ends with a plenary session, during which the day´s results are presented and participants are given the opportunity to talk about examples of ´good practice´ with ICT.

Day2=Wed,Aug2:Software for Classics
Presentation of different kinds of Classics-specific software. Instructions & hands-on tasks on creation of exercises with quizfaber,hot potatoes or similar. Perseus. Font issues. Presentation software.

Day3=Thurs,Aug3:Webpages and websites
Briefing on the creation of webpages and websites. Hands-on tasks. Creation of the delegates´ own webpages. Revision of the techniques of image processing. How to move part of an image.Layers.How to insert text into an image.

Day4=Fri,Aug4:The Classical Challenge: The ancient world in modern teaching. Creation of teaching materials for use across the web. The participants are divided into 2 groups according to their own wishes. 1 group will approach the subject of the day in a more technically advanced manner, creating Shockwave content using acromedia Director, while the 2nd group will take a more general didactical approach.
Programme for Group A: The technical challenge (only for advanced users)
Creation of software resources. Director as a tool. What it does, how it does it? Shockwave, CD-ROM creation, basic programming skills. Hands-on tasks and actual programming. Programme for Group B: The didactic challenge for Classics through the web Different ways of learning: e-learning, online learning, the JiTT concept, WebQuest, networking projects. Hands-on task: Creating a lesson plan integrating 1 of the aspects of ICT presented.

Day5=Sat,Aug5:Drills and exercises, monitoring and assessment of student progress Introduction and hands-on work on drills and exercises for students to improve their learning (vocabulary drills inter alia).Intro and hands-on work on monitoring and assessment of student progress. Final session. Participants report back about the outcome of the course in relation to Classics teaching in their own country.Evaluation of the course.
