FULL DESCRIPTION OF TRAINING CONTENTS
IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE TRAINING: (EN)
A web site (including a common web space where participants will be able to upload materials) will be developed providing the participants with all necessary course information as: course description, programme, educational material and relevant sites prior to the start of the course, guidelines for travelling. The organisers will provide the participants with recent reports from European surveys on the field of science education and technology enhanced learning. Prior to the beginning of the course, all participants will be able to familiarize themselves with both the training course topic (by accessing the website address the slides of the lectures that will be delivered during the training course) and with the course methodology (by getting access to the course structure and tools). Also the participants will be asked to perform a limited survey on the use of inquiry based and game based approaches in their schools. The participants will be also asked to prepare a series of scenarios that are introducing inquiry based techniques in science teaching. These scenarios will be discussed in detail during the course.
A large amount of digital science education content already exists in the form of science museum collections, digital repositories and libraries. This large amount of digital science content has the potential to support technology-enhanced science education. However, science education teachers are lacking the time to investigate the potential educational added-value of the huge amount of digital resources typically returned though web search engines. An important factor, in order to make search and retrieval of science educational content more efficient is the quality and quantity of educational metadata associated with these resources. In general, the commonly accepted way to describe educational resources is the IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) Standard. The training course "Educational Resources in Technology-Enhanced Science Learning" aims first to develop science education teachers’ and trainers’ skills in searching, sharing and developing educational resources adopting the learning objects paradigm and then, to get familiar with specific issues related to their application to technology-enhanced science education. The training course will provide European Science Education teachers/trainers with an introduction to learning objects, educational metadata and learning objects repositories, together with hands-on experiences on practical approaches and tools that are commonly used to support the learning object paradigm. Furthermore, it will focus on issues of particular interest in applying the learning objects paradigm in technology-enhanced science education, such as the description of science curriculum related characteristics of science education resources. To this end, the proposed training course is anticipated to facilitate European teachers and trainers in using efficiently existing tools and services for creating, sharing and searching reusable educational resources, so as to support and improve their day-to-day teaching activities.
The course will include presentations and practical sessions (labs) on WWW and educational uses for teachers, Strategies for searching information online, Introduction to the concept of learning objects, Introduction to learning repositories, Introduction to preparing, uploading and sharing learning resources (use of xplora, discoveryspace, curriculumonline), Introduction to metadata, educational metadata, and metadata-based searching, authoritative educational metadata schemas (DC-ed & IEEE LOM), Social metadata and Web 2.0 tools (folksonomies & social tagging), presentation of popular social tools (e.g. Flikr) and scenarios for their use in the classroom, Pedagogical strategies and best practices for using digital teaching & learning resources in the classroom, Hands-on session working on resources related to science (use of COSMOS, xlpora), Setting up a repository in the school's server and Connecting repository with the Learning Resource Exchange (LRE). The training course lasts 21 hours of lectures and demonstrations, and 12 hour of hands-on workshops. The lectures and the demonstrations of the training course will be held in an auditorium equipped with a data projector and a laptop, whereas, the workshops will be held in a multimedia laboratory where each participant will have direct access to a PC and will carry out planned exercises.
During the weeks following the training course the participants will have the opportunity through conducting specially designed mini-projects to further apply what they have learnt by producing educational resources following the learning objects paradigm and sharing them through the establishment of a teachers’ community of best science education practice. The participants will be invited to participate to the COSMOS (www.cosmos-project.eu) user group. COSMOS is a large scale science web repository so the participants will have the opportunity to explore in practice what they were trained during the course. They will be part to a community that numbers currently 1200 science teachers who are applying inquiry based techniques in their everyday teaching. The training team will provide to the participants all the necessary guidelines and support to implement the proposed approaches in their classroom.
