The European Language Label initiative, launched by the European Commission in 2002, rewards excellence and innovation in language learning. Erasmus+ supports the Label and wants to spread the word about inspiring winners.

Most of the Erasmus+ National Agencies regularly award the European Language Label (ELL) to local, regional, national or European projects. These stand-out projects have found creative ways to improve the quality of language teaching and motivate students. They may also make the best use of available resources to diversify the languages on offer, or have taken other innovative steps to improve language learning.

The Label may be awarded to any initiative that supports the lifelong teaching and learning of EU and participating countries’ languages, no matter whether it is run by education and training establishments, local and regional authorities, employers or associations. The ELL can also be awarded to individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of language teaching and learning.

In 15 years, over 2,000 labels have been awarded to inspiring projects or to anyone involved in teaching languages, whatever their target group. Some of these have been supported by Erasmus+ or previous EU education funding programmes. Note-worthy examples include Glottodrama, which teaches foreign languages through drama, the eTwinning project “Let’s Play together” or the Intensive French Course for Physiotherapists project.

For 2016-17, the ELL priorities align with the Paris Declaration objectives put forth by Education ministers. They called for action at all levels to reinforce education’s role in promoting citizenship and the common values of freedom, tolerance and non-discrimination; and fostering social cohesion and an inclusive society.

Participating countries select applications via an open call for proposals, issued at least 2 months before the deadline for applications. If you would like to propose your initiative, get in touch with your Erasmus+ National Agency and find out about the next selection date!
