When does the school year start in Poland? When do universities in Sweden break for the summer? How long is the Christmas/New Year break in schools in Ireland? An updated overview of school and academic calendars for 2011/12 in 33 European countries is now available.
The Eurydice network, which provides information on and analysis of education systems and policies in Europe, has just published an annual update of the school and academic calendars of the 27 EU Member States, Croatia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey for 2011/12.
These annual calendars are available in English and provide essential information for students and academics who want to go abroad, for families moving to another country as well as for everyone participating in European co-operation projects in the field of education.
The school calendar contains national data on the length of the school year, the start and the end of each school year, and the timing and length of school holidays. It covers both primary and secondary education.
The academic calendar contains national data on how the academic year is structured (beginning of the year, term times, holidays and examinations periods). Variations depending on type of (university or non-university) study programme are also indicated.
