This project, which ran from 2007 to 2008, involved teachers, youth, book industry experts and training professionals. During the festival, the results of a survey across eight countries on books, reading and essentials texts in the education of European youth were presented to the participants. Workshops outlining the experiences of the schools involved in this project also took place during the event.
The festival, which was designed by the EWHUM consortium (European Humanism in the World), helped to promote the ideals and values of humanists in European school systems, as specified in the Lisbon Strategy. The event led to a successful collection of best practices in the field of reading, particularly with regard to how this is taught in school. The school delegations from ten European countries who attended the Festival were chosen according to quality and academic merit.
The results of this project have been integrated into effective national and EU education policies, with the assistance of universities and other educational organisations.
