Partners in the ELICIT – European Literacy and Citizenship Education – project are focusing on education and teacher training. The project, which runs from 2010 to 2012, aims to provide conceptual references which teacher trainers, lecturers and institutional bodies can refer to when designing a course curriculum for educating teachers. The ultimate goal is to ensure that all educational staff in the EU can develop and enhance European literacy and citizenship education.
If Europeans are to feel that they belong to a common space with shared values, they should be encouraged to raise their level of European literacy. Education plays an essential part in this, but unless teachers and other educational staff are made aware of the issues and provided with the adequate training to manage them, such objectives cannot be achieved.
The partners involved in this project have developed a 'Reference Framework of Competences for Teaching European Literacy and Citizenship', a database of resources from the various partnership countries, plus a 'Portfolio of the European
