The database aims to inspire practitioners, stakeholders and policymakers by presenting "best practices" in the field of
language teaching and learning.
The European Language Label is awarded to local, regional, and national projects that have found creative ways to improve
the quality of language teaching, motivate students, make the best use of available resources to diversify the languages
on offer, and other innovative initiatives.

Opening the Doors to Language Learning for Non-Traditional Learners
This project is the second phase of a Europe-wide, three-phase project to promote independent learning among non-traditional learners. Phases 1 and 2 explored different types of delivery system for language instruction and self-instruction. Phase 3 will be exclusively concerned with dissemination of results. In Phase 2 we encouraged project participants to use audio-visual media to teach themselves a language. In Ireland, the institutions that participated were The National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM), The University of Limerick (UL) and Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). Irish was offered at NUIM, French at UL, and German at WIT. All national collaborators offered 12/14-week self-directed programmes providing a range of supports, including multi-media self-study packs, prescribed video text, supplementary online materials, native speaker language advisors, and self-repo
