In the framework of the policy dialogue with Southern Mediterranean countries, the European Commission's Directorate General for Education and Culture organised a "Seminar on Quality assurance in Higher Education in Southern Mediterranean countries - A tool to promote international cooperation" on 27-28 March 2014 in Brussels.
The event was attended by 91 particiants - including 77 persons from nine Southern Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia) representing ministries of education, universities, quality assurance institutions, student organisations and national and regional organisations active in the higher education field.
Throughout the seminar, participants had the chance to discuss the topic of quality assurance in depth and provided for an excellent networking opportunity. The first day focused on recent developments of quality assurance in EU and Southern Mediterranean countries, higher education systems and the identification of practical ways of insuring quality in international cooperation schemes, namely credit mobility of students and staff and joint programmes (degree mobility).
The second half day was reserved for exchanging best practices and discussion on how the EU could better support internal and external quality assurance mechanisms in Southern Mediterranean countries.
The main conclusions of the seminar will be presented at the next policy dialogue on Higher Education between EU and Southern Mediterranean countries which will take place on 23-24 June 2014 in Brussels.
