History was made on 1 Jan 1999 when 11 European Union countries created a monetary union with a single currency, the euro. Euro banknotes and coins entered circulation on 1 Jan 2002. But the history of Europe´s common currency has been a long time in the making and can be charted back to the origins of the EU itself. The historic adventure of the euro is described in this booklet.
The booklet is an ideal way for children to learn about the diversity of the European family. Teachers can use it to explain what the euro and the euro area are, and introduce children to the cultural, scientific and natural heritage of the countries that make up the European Union.
