Due to ongoing violent events in Syria, the European Union suspended all its cooperation with the Syrian government in 2011. Relations were governed by the European-Syrian Cooperation Agreement. The European Union remains committed to delivering assistance to the Syrian population affected by the conflict, notably refugees and internally displaced persons, with a focus on the needs of children, students, human rights defenders and the civil society.
The EU-Syria Association Agreement was initialled in 2004 but was never signed. There have been no economic dialogues to date.
