The leaflet summarises the main objectives and elements of the enhanced EU economic governance, the biggest reform of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) since its creation. Beyond strengthening rules on the fiscal, the macroeconomic, and the institutional side, the EU economic growth strategy "Europe 2020" is the way forward to ensure economic growth with high employment, productivity and social cohesion. Ten years after the introduction of euro banknotes and coins, these combined efforts should allow the benefits of EMU and the euro to fully materialise.

This poster was produced in 2012 at the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the introduction of euro banknotes and coins. It shows the main elements taken from the 2-euro common commemorative coin which all 17 euro area countries issued for this occasion. These elements symbolise the importance of the euro as the single currency for euro area citizens, finance (the euro symbol), trade (the red ship), and industry (the factory, wind power stations).

This poster shows the complete collection of 121 2-euro commemorative coins issued by euro area countries in the first decade of euro coins, including the three sets of common commemorative coins at the occasions of 50 years of the Treaty of Rome (2007), 10 years of Economic and Monetary Union (2009), and 10 years of euro banknotes and coins (2012). The collection is arranged around the topics of European personalities, values, monuments, history, and culture.

History was made on 1 Jan 1999 when 11 European Union countries created a monetary union with a single currency, the euro. Euro banknotes and coins entered circulation on 1 Jan 2002. But the history of Europe´s common currency has been a long time in the making and can be charted back to the origins of the EU itself. So, did prices rise when we started paying in euro? Yes, some did, but prices rise most years due to current inflation not linked to the money changeover. Average price inflation in 2002, the year euro banknotes were introduced, was 2.3%, the same as the year before. This means a broad basket of goods that cost €100 in a supermarket in 2001 would cost, on average, €102.3 in 2002.
