As from 1 January 2011, Estonia will be a member of the euro area. Over 330 million people in 17 Member States will thus be sharing the same currency – the euro.
Archived January 2009. On 1 January 2009 the euro area will have two reasons to celebrate: Slovakia will become the 16th country to use the single currency on the same day that the euro marks its 10th anniversary. From New Year's Day 328.6 million people including 5.4 million Slovaks will now share the same currency.
Archived March 2009. After Slovenia’s successful changeover to the euro on 1 January 2007, Malta and Cyprus followed on 1 January 2008, bringing euro-area membership to 15 EU countries and a population of around 320 million.
Archived June 2007. On 1 January 2007 Slovenia became of the first of the EU’s most recent members – the 12 countries which joined the EU in 2004 and 2007 – to adopt the euro as its currency. It thus became the 13th member of the euro area. The meticulous planning for the changeover paid off as the transition went swiftly and smoothly.
