20/09/2007 : Joint European Commission - Portuguese Presidency workshop: The Internal Market in the 21st Century

Brussels, 20 September 2007

This workshop was jointly organised by the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission and the Portuguese Presidency. It is a contribution to the ongoing Single Market Review of the European Commission.

The Single Market programme has created benefits for both citizens and companies, and the Single Market has been the source of sizable benefits for the EU economy as a whole. However, a large potential remains to be further exploited. The objective of this workshop was to provide an opportunity for academics and policy makers to discuss:

  1. interlinkages between the Single Market and EMU, in particular, whether the Internal Market and EMU, by encouraging intra-industry specialisation, facilitate the functioning of the euro area;
  2. how the Single Market serves as a tool to promote productivity in Europe; and
  3. governance issues of the future Single Market, such as the cost of economic adjustment and a new approach to product market and sector monitoring.
