Travelling exhibition - Portugal

Opened on 5 January by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, the start of the exhibition coincided with the fourth enlargement of the euro area to include its 16th member, Slovakia. It also marked the start of the 10-year anniversary of the euro, and the launch of the new commemorative coin to mark the first ten years.

A wide range of reading and promotional material is available to all visitors, as well as a new coin pressing machine where visitors can stamp the symbol of the 10 years of the euro onto their own token.

The Bank of Portugal and the Portuguese Mint are also contributing interactive elements to the exhibition, such as professional detection equipment to identify forged euro banknotes.

The exhibition will be open 7 days a week from 8:00 to 20:00.

Braga, 27 February – 25 March 2009
Shopping Braga Parque

The Commission's euro exhibition travelled from Lisbon to Braga, the third largest city of Portugal located in the far north of the country. The exhibition was opened on 27 February by Margarida Marques, Head of the European Commission Representation in Portugal, and MEP José Silva Peneda. The exhibition is displayed in a popular shopping mall in the town centre. This venue provides an ideal location to attract numerous visitors in a country which tends to be more sceptic towards the single currency.

The Europe Direct Centre from Entre Douro e Minho is also contributing to the exhibition by manning the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open 7 days a week from 10:00 to 23:00/24:00 Friday and Saturday (the opening times of the Shopping Centre).

The Azores, São Miguel, Ponta Delgada, 15 July – 17 August 2009

The euro exhibition has been officially opened in Ponta Delgada on 15 July 2009 by Ignacio Perez Caldentey, from the Cabinet of the Comissioner Joaquim Almunia, European Commissioner in charge of economic and monetary affairs.

The exhibition is hosted by the Regional Government of the Azores and located in Teatro Micaelense.

The euro exhibition is open every day from 15 July until 17 August from 08:00 to 20:00.

The Azores, Faial, Horta, 25 August – 13 September 2009

The euro exhibition has been officially opened in Horta on 25 August 2009 by Joao Nogueira Martins, Head of Unit in DG Economy and Finances of the European Commission.

The exhibition is being hosted by Regional Government of the Azores and located in the Sociedade Amor da Patria.

The euro exhibition is open everyday from 25 August until 13 September from 13:00 to 16:00 and from 18:00 to 22:00.
