EuroTeam

The EuroTeam was created by the European Commission in 2006 to respond to public interest in Economic and Monetary Union and the euro in the countries which joined the European Union in 2004 and are bound to join the euro area in the future.

Today the network is still very active in 8 EU countries and numbers around 100 independent speakers from various milieus – academic, public administration, professional associations and the private sector – who act as ambassadors for the euro in their country, delivering lectures, speeches and presentations to a variety of audiences on request.

Upon accession, the new EU Member States committed themselves to adopting the euro as soon as they fulfil all the necessary conditions – the convergence criteria. Demand for early information on EMU and the euro among citizens and public and private organisations is very high, as opinion polls repeatedly show.

EuroTeam members are national specialists in economic and financial affairs and can communicate with their fellow citizens in their own language and can accurately explain exactly what integration into the euro area means for the given Member State. When they act as a EuroTeam Member and give lectures and participate in seminars and roundtable discussions, they do not serve any institutional or private interest. As far as the EuroTeam is concerned, the role of the European Commission and its Representations in the Member States is limited to network co-ordination, training support and the provision of information material.

The network is partly decentralised. The European Commission Representation offices in the capital cities of the concerned countries are in charge of the co-ordination of the national networks. The Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs is responsible for centralised activities and overall co-ordinationn.
