50th anniversary of signing of the Treaty of Rome

All euro-area countries

The coin shows the treaty with the signatures of the six founding countries on a background evoking the paving – designed by Michelangelo – of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, where the Treaty was signed on 25 March 1957, giving birth to the modern-day European Union.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Germany

The national side of the coin reproduces the Schwerin Castle, accompanied by the words ‘Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’. This coin is the second in a series dedicated to the German federal states (Bundesländer). Coins will be issued in the same sequence as the annual rotation of the presidency in the 'Bundesrat' (upper house of parliament), in which the 16 federal states are represented.

Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Portugal

In 2007 Portugal issued an additional commemorative coin on the occasion of the rotating presidency of the EU, from July to December 2007. The coin shows a cork oak (Quercus suber) and the Portuguese coat of arms under its branches, together with the word ‘Portugal’ and the legend ‘2007 Presidência do Concelho da UE’ (2007 Presidency of the Council of the EU).

90th anniversary of the declaration of independence

Finland

This coin was issued on the occasion of the 90-year anniversary of the Finnish declaration of independence, adopted by the Parliament of Finland on 6 December 1917, which ended Finland’s status as an autonomous Russian Grand Duchy. The coin shows nine rowers with long oars in a boat, together with the dates 2007 (top) and 1917 (bottom).

Bicentenary of Giuseppe Garibaldi’s birth

San Marino

The coin features a portrait of Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), the Italian revolutionary who played a crucial role in the formation of a unified Italy. The portrait is based on a photograph of Garibaldi taken in 1866.
